Day one<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Start your day in \u200b\u200bthe town of Otok with a tour of the Oto\u010dka suvara<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and the milling of grains from the fields of Srijem. Horse powered, this dry mill is a unique mill that does not exist anywhere else in Croatia. Continue your journey around the natural phenomenon of the Oto\u010dki Virovi<\/strong><\/span><\/a>; people here will tell you they are not sure whether the Virovi is a stream or a lake, but that they are sure it has never dried up. Take a walk to the picnic area and the Virgrad archaeological site<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and learn the legend of the Virgrad prince.<\/p>\n

Return to the Virovi restaurant<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for lunch and taste traditional food from Srijem. Don’t miss out on the original kulen (a type of flavoured sausage made of minced pork), spicy sausages and poderane ga\u0107e (a deep-fried flatbread, l\u00e1ngos). Spend an active afternoon in the Spa\u010dva Forest: rent a bicycle and explore the marked cycling routes<\/strong><\/span><\/a> or rent a canoe and go exploring from a completely different perspective. If you prefer rest and meditation, relax with a book in the deckchairs near the Oto\u010dki virovi, or cast your rods and listen to the forest while angling<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for common carp, northern pike and catfish.<\/p>\n

Find accommodation in rooms, apartments or family-run farms<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the Tourist Board of the Spa\u010dva Forest Area. In the morning, head to Bo\u0161njaci to see the Slavonska ku\u0107a (Slavonian House)<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which is a true witness of life through time in the Tourist Board of the Spa\u010dva Forest Area. Here you will discover how life was in the countryside 200 years ago. You will find out how the homes of the people of Srijem were decorated, what kind of furniture was modern, and how important handicrafts and \u0161lingeraj (unique embroidery from Bo\u0161njaci) were for interior design. You will learn about the ways in which grains were stored and how the vast Slavonian fields were cultivated but will also get insight into our ancestors\u2019 foods and drink.<\/p>\n

After visiting the Slavonska ku\u0107a, take a walk before lunch to the parish church of St. Martin<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Bo\u0161njaci, and find out how his footsteps form a cultural and historical route that connects cities and towns throughout Europe. Have lunch at the Aquarius restaurant<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Bo\u0161njaci, currently the only restaurant that boasts the Flavours of Srijem and Slavonia label in the Tourist Board of the Spa\u010dva Forest Area, so after a hearty lunch, go to a tasting of local products from family-run farms<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Bo\u0161njaci and Vrbanja.<\/p>\n

Buy ground red pepper which will fly you back to Srijem when you are back in your kitchen. If you happen to be in our region during the watermelon season, don’t miss out on the best summer refreshment, and let there be at least one distillery on your list, where you can taste the best rakija in Croatia. End the day at the Zvjezdangrad<\/strong><\/span><\/a> picnic area on the banks of the Bosut. There, the river that the Romans said was so calm that it flew in one direction in the morning and in the other in the afternoon (depending on wind direction) will usher you in another pleasant night in the east of Croatia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

After you have rested, slept well and had an authentic Slavonian breakfast, you can go visit the Sumarski muzej (the Forestry Museum)<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Bo\u0161njaci. Here you will discover how important the pedunculate oak forest has always been for the life and prosperity of our region. The valued Slavonian oak has been exported to the whole of Europe for centuries, and thanks to sustainable forest management, today the main feature of the Spa\u010dva Forest is its naturalness.<\/p>\n

Before or after another lunch to remember in Srijem, take a walk to the shrine of the Mother of Good Hope<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in \u0160umanovci, which believers also call the Hidden Lady of \u0160umanovci. This oldest shrine in \u200b\u200bVukovar-Srijem County dates to the 14th century, and believers and pilgrims still find “a sign of reliable hope and comfort” in it.
